How to Set Up an eSIM on iPhone: Step-by-Step Guide

Which iPhones Support eSIM?
Before you start, make sure your iPhone model supports eSIM:
- Full eSIM support: iPhone XR, XS, XS Max, 11 series, 12 series, 13 series, 14 series, 15 series, 16 series
- eSIM only (no physical SIM tray): iPhone 14 and newer in the US, and select other markets
- Not supported: iPhone X, 8, 7, SE (1st gen), and older
Your iPhone must also be carrier unlocked. If you bought your phone outright or finished paying off your contract, it should be unlocked. You can check in Settings > General > About and look for "No SIM restrictions."
Before You Begin
You'll need:
- A compatible iPhone (see list above)
- A WiFi or cellular data connection (WiFi recommended for downloading the eSIM profile)
- Your eSIM QR code or direct installation link (sent to your email after purchase)
Pro tip: Install your eSIM before your trip while you're still on WiFi at home. You can activate the data plan later when you arrive at your destination.
Method 1: Direct Link Installation (Easiest)
This is the fastest way -- just tap a link:
- Open the installation link from your email on your iPhone
- Your iPhone will recognize it as an eSIM profile and prompt you to install
- Tap Continue to add the cellular plan
- When asked, label it something memorable like "Travel Data"
- Set it as your data line when you're ready to use it
That's it. The whole process takes about 60 seconds.
Method 2: QR Code Installation
If you received a QR code instead:
- Open Settings on your iPhone
- Tap Cellular (or Mobile Data)
- Tap Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan
- Choose Use QR Code
- Point your camera at the QR code
- Tap Continue when the carrier plan appears
- Wait for the profile to download and activate
- Label your new plan (e.g., "Travel Data")
How to Activate Your eSIM for Travel
Once installed, your eSIM sits dormant until you turn it on:
- Go to Settings > Cellular
- Find your travel eSIM plan in the list
- Toggle Turn On This Line
- Make sure Data Roaming is enabled for the eSIM line
- Under Cellular Data, select your eSIM as the data line
Your primary SIM stays active for calls and texts from home, while the eSIM handles all data abroad.
Managing Dual SIM on iPhone
With both your regular SIM and eSIM active, you'll want to configure which line does what:
| Function | Recommended Setting |
|---|---|
| Default voice line | Your home SIM |
| Default SMS | Your home SIM |
| Cellular data | Your travel eSIM |
| Data roaming | ON (for eSIM line only) |
Go to Settings > Cellular to manage these preferences.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
eSIM won't activate?
- Make sure you have a stable WiFi connection

- Verify Data Roaming is ON for the eSIM line
